Basketball for kids and adults with autism

Basketball offers a clear structure that many autistic players find easier to navigate than more free-flowing team sports. Players have defined positions, plays run in recognisable patterns, and the coach can teach specific skills in isolation before combining them. The half-court can also be adjusted to reduce the sensory load, running smaller sessions with fewer players.

Basketball NSW runs several inclusion streams. Its intellectual-impairment national championship pathway supports players who want to progress to elite competition. Walking Basketball is a slower version of the game with no running or contact, popular with older players and those who find full-pace basketball too intense. Wheelchair Basketball is available for players with physical disability, delivered through Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT.

The Sydney Basketball Association runs a dedicated Intellectual Disability programme with an accredited coach and weekly ID-specific training sessions. This was funded through a 2023 NSW Local Sport Grant and has been a model for expanding inclusive basketball in NSW.

At the community level, local basketball associations across Sydney and regional NSW increasingly offer inclusive session options. If your local association does not have an All Abilities stream, Basketball NSW can help you find the closest one or start one at your club.

Sessions typically run indoors year-round, once a week or more often. Basketball is well-suited to gyms with sensory-friendly options like adjustable lighting and access to a quiet room. Family are welcome at most sessions, and coaches are trained to support neurodivergent players.
