Athletics for kids and adults with autism

Athletics offers something unusual for a competitive sport: every event is essentially individual, even when contested at team meets. A runner runs their own race. A long jumper takes their own attempts. A shot putter throws in their own turn. For autistic athletes who thrive on individual focus but still want the community of a club, athletics is often a strong match.

Little Athletics NSW is the entry point for children aged 5 to 15. In 2022 Little Athletics NSW launched the True Inclusion Method (TIM), a framework for supporting athletes with disability at community-level competition. Coaches at Little Athletics centres are trained in TIM and know how to adapt events for neurodivergent participants. Little Athletics ACT runs a parallel programme in Canberra.

NSW Athletics Para is the pathway for older athletes and those wanting to compete at state or national level. Multi-class athletics is well developed in Australia, with classified events at every major carnival and clear routes through state championships to Nationals and international competition. Partnerships with Lifestart Disability Services support athletes with intellectual disability entering the pathway.

The Australian All Schools Championships is a highlight of the athletics calendar and features multi-class events prominently. For autistic teenagers who compete at their school, All Schools is often the first taste of national-level sport.

Athletics sessions at Little Athletics run weekly on Saturday mornings in the summer season (September to March). Fees are modest, and most centres welcome families to attend sessions. Try-out sessions are usually available for free before you commit to registration.
