Wheelchair basketball in NSW & ACT
Wheelchair basketball is one of the most established adaptive sports in Australia. Here is where to play in NSW and the ACT, from junior camps to the state league.
Wheelchair basketball in NSW and the ACT is delivered through a partnership between Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT and Basketball NSW. It is a genuinely accessible sport that combines the pace and strategy of stand-up basketball with the added skill of chair mobility. Players use dedicated sports wheelchairs designed for the game, and mainstream basketball courts are used throughout.
Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT is the peak organisation, based at Kevin Betts Stadium in Blacktown. It runs weekly training sessions, junior camps under the Junior Wheelies programme, and coordinates state-level competition. HER Sport is its specific programme for women and girls, and Rolling Rainbow is its LGBTQIA+ inclusive stream. The Central Coast Hub at Niagara Park, opened in 2020, is the newest wheelchair sports centre in NSW and runs its own local sessions.
The GTK Waratah Wheelchair League is the state competition. Teams rotate across Niagara Park, Hawkesbury, Shellharbour, Penrith, and Sutherland venues over four rounds plus finals each season. Teams change composition year to year based on player registrations, so the league remains dynamic and welcoming to new players.
A distinctive feature of wheelchair basketball in NSW is reverse inclusion: many sessions welcome players without disability to play in wheelchairs alongside players who use wheelchairs day-to-day. This creates larger training groups, more competitive intensity, and a stronger community. Family members and friends are actively encouraged to join sessions in a chair.
Wheelchair basketball suits players with any physical disability that affects lower-limb mobility, including spinal injury, cerebral palsy, amputation, and other conditions. No prior basketball experience is required. Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT provides sports chairs at sessions for new players, so you can try before investing.
